Black Bear Hunt in Maryland

Someone posted this to the Vegan Meetup Group for the area, so in case anyone reading my blog would be interested in this and isn’t a member of the meetup group or didn’t hear about this for any other reason:

Tell Gov. O’Malley to Cancel the Bear Hunt

The Maryland Legislature missed the opportunity to pass legislation which would have ended the state’s annual bear trophy hunt. Now we are calling on Governor Martin O’Malley to act and cancel the hunt, which is scheduled to begin on October 22. Your voice can help to save Maryland’s bears from another senseless slaughter.

Maryland’s bears were once hunted to the brink of extinction. After a fifty-year reprieve, allowing the bear population to slowly recover, then-Governor Robert Ehrlich put Maryland’s bears under the gun in 2004. Will Governor O’Malley save our bears from the fate of the 101 bears already killed in the state’s three hunts?

For MD folks:

Please call Governor Martin O’Malley at 410-974-3591 or 1-800-811-8336 and urge him to cancel Maryland’s bear hunt. After you make your phone call, you can also take action online here to automatically send an email to the Governor in support of canceling the state?s unnecessary black bear trophy hunts.

If you are able, please attend the rally for the bears. Sunday, October 21 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the Governor’s Mansion: Government House, 100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401

And even if you can’t go to the event, if you live in Maryland, you can send an email to the Governor. He has already refused to cancel the hunt, but it can’t hurt to email him and let him know that you don’t agree.

Please sign the petition against Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, the ‘artist’ who starved a dog as an ‘art exhibition’, and/or spread the story to others. Here is the coverage so far: Thank You!

I think those of us who live outside of Maryland can also write to tell him out tourist dollars are going elsewhere. Unfortunately the almighty dollar is a useful tool.
