Random thoughts: the people who should get it, but don’t

surfer in sayulito

I was listening to Jack Johnson at work today, and some general thoughts were swirling in my head – surfer, concerned about the environment, did a very green tour through the U.S., was quoted as having seen a truck of chickens and vowing never to eat chicken again. As far as I know, he’s not vegetarian at all. He just seems like the kind of guy who would get there, and then to veganism, through his concern for the environment.

I wonder about other people who also seem like they should get it – Ani Difranco (through social justice concerns), Emma Goldman (anarchy), to name two – and I can’t quite figure out why they don’t. Social justice, the environment, anarchy…they all are connected for me to animal rights.

Maybe it is just wishful thinking on my part, that people I respect in some ways would live up to my ideals in other ways as well.

I am usually surprised and frustrated when a seemingly environmentally-friendly and healthy person is not a vegan…

Indeed, it is quite startling that people who are so socially aware and active do not make the connection between their activities and beliefs to that of veganism.

Maybe it is that just no one has approached them about it and, in that case, it is duty to do so. I doubt people such as those you listed would bad-mouth such a cause.

    cherie: exactly.

surplusvalue: that’s a really good point, about it being our duty to bring it up. Too late for Emma, of course, and I have a hard time imagining any communication to ani difranco or jack johnson would ever be seen by them, but…that’s no reason not to try, is it?
