John Lee, my sponsored rooster at Peaceful Prairie

John Lee

I recently got caught up on my sponsorship of this handsome rooster at Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary. Michele has a way of describing her residents that make me feel like I really know them. Here is the response I received from her yesterday with a heartwarming description of John Lee:

Thanks so much for the sponsorship donation for John Lee! As usual he is impressing us with his leadership abilities – people could / should learn a hell of a lot from a guy like John Lee. In everything he does he has the greater good in mind. He never ventures into anything unless he has thought it out carefully and then he continues to supervise with the utmost caution. He does have some help now from his duck Deputy Duffy. Yup. A duck. Duffy is not interested in bonding with the other ducks – he feels much safer and of service when he’s with John Lee helping to keep the order and serve and protect all of the Katrina chickens.

We are still digging out of what was a horrendous storm last week. We couldn’t even get to John Lee’s barn until three days after the storm due to the wall of snow in front of and all around his barn. ( every barn and our house were completely snowed in with 12 foot drifts!)

We have been digging and shoveling for 5 days straight to get all of the barns open. Everyone survived, but John Lee’s town did the best. I feared the worst for them since they are the weakest and most vulnerable of all the animals, but he must have kept them all calm, warm and even rationed the food and water somehow because they actually still had a few scatterings of grain and about a 1/4 inch of water in their bowl.

There were two injured hens ( injuries from their poor genetically messed up feet) – who John Lee was sheltering when we finally were able to open the doors. If it weren’t for John Lee’s protectiveness, they could have been trampled.

He’s something else!

I killed my other little camera, so I’m going to try to find a halfway decent one on sale now that x-mas is over. If I do, I’ll email you some new pictures of your handsome young man and his deputy.

Hope you have a Peaceful and Productive New Year!

Michele

Aw, John Lee! 🙂

Nice! He really stands out, not only because of his color, either. Great photo-taking!! 😀

Thanks! It was hard to get one where he wasn’t half hidden by his flock! PPS took on quite a few Katrina rescues, and John Lee looks after at least half of them.

That’s how I feel too. Lucky to have known him and them, and that I get a chance to help them out. Michele and Chris at Peaceful Prairie just amaze me. You should check out their blog too – peacefulprairie.blogspot.com – more stories about the various residents! I have to admit I have a special fondness for goosifer. 🙂
