Event: Run for the Animals

race for the animals

I am not sure how many people came out for the 5k today, but it was a pretty good showing, in my opinion. There were the local teams there – HSUS, COK, FARM, PCRM, and BARC. There were a lot of runners, maybe 100. I think there were close to 200 people there altogether, some with their dogs or their kids or both. It was a lot of fun, and everyone seemed really happy to be there, participating, helping.

And it didn’t rain, despite the rather threatening sky.

PCRM won the team award, getting the honored pigasus trophy. HSUS jokingly grumbled about that, pretending to be disgruntled that they didn’t win two years in a row. There were jokes about how HSUS would have swept the race if only it had been a kung-fu/run biathalon, but there was no doubt that PCRM had the lean, mean, running machines on their team this year.

There were some enthusiastic young supporters who not only ran in the 5k or walked in the 1 mile fun walk, they went around selling beanie babies to support Poplar Spring. There were tables loaded with vegan post-race treats, for both humans and canines. The dogs got to win raffle prizes, as did the humans.

It was really a great event, one that highlights what local groups can do within the community. I don’t know how much Poplar Spring raised in money, but what the event raised in moral is probably immeasurable.

Of course events like these are quite a bit of work. The volunteers were really amazing, and I know they put in quite a bit of their time to make this happen.

All in all, it was a successful day.

There might have been even more people – I’m pretty bad at guessing these things. The “media advisory” (which I just looked at today) said they were expecting around 500 runners! I don’t think there were that many, but it definitely could have been over 300 people there!
